Artistic fashion - John Galliano

Juan Carlos Antonio Galliano-Guillén (best known as John Galliano) is a renowned British fashion designer born in Gibraltar (28th November 1960). You know those designers that you look at their shows/clothes and wonder “where in the world do you wear that?” Yea he’s that kind of designer (honestly I never understood such fashion until recently so don't worry, your not alone).

He has been the head designer for couture houses, Givenchy (July 1995 to October 1996) and Christian Dior (October 1996 to March 2011). He also has his own label John Galliano.

His success is largely attributed to the highly respected fashion trend setter, Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, and Andre Leon Talley, then European Correspondent at Vanity Fair. With their assistance he managed to secure the necessary financial backing and high society stamp needed to give him credibility in Paris, in 1993.

Galliano is a designer known for his audacious and out of this world pieces. His inspiration comes from his love of theatre and femininity, thus the creation of very fictional pieces, and shows that are more of thearetical entertainment. He is known to take exotic trips around the world, visiting fancy neighborhoods and tours old Hollywood homes to develop a visual for his creations. The designer searches for a setting and characters then he develops stupendous costumes to meet his expectations. He often uses historical events, locations and people as inspiration as well.

Coming back down to earth, Galliano has also designed several wearable pieces under the Dior label, for celebrities such as Heidi Klum, Charlize Theron, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Cameron Diaz which has always earned them a spot on the best dressed list.

You can only understand his pieces once you understand what I call fashion from the art. Only then will you stop having cringed up faces with the words of “WTH” written all over, but rather an impeccable smile because of the appreciation of the art that he expresses.

Unfortunately, Mr Galliano was recently fired from the House of Dior, due to Anti-Semitic Tirade at a Parisian Café.
